Turn it on only after the phone itself is online

Hotspot repeats the phone’s upstream. If Chrome on the phone fails, the laptop will fail too. Finish the landing checklist first: Vietnam line, mobile data on, data roaming off, a page that actually loads. Then enable the hotspot. iPhone: Personal Hotspot. Samsung: Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Pixel: Hotspot and tethering. Set a password you can read aloud. Forget the network on the laptop if it cached a dead session from a previous country.

One bucket of data

There is no second meter for tethered devices. A laptop doing cloud backup, a tablet on YouTube, and the phone’s own maps all subtract from 5GB. When the high-speed allowance ends, the plan does not slow down. Data stops, including for anyone on the hotspot. The phone may still show the hotspot as enabled. The upstream is what died. It returns at 23:59 Vietnam Standard Time without you touching the menu, provided the plan days have not expired. Plan expiry is separate. It is 7, 15, or 30 days from the first Viettel connection, not from midnight.

Practical split: let the laptop use hotel Wi-Fi for downloads and system updates. Use the hotspot for the hour you are in a cafe with no password, or in a taxi when a travel partner needs a map. Chat and maps for a second phone are cheap. A video meeting is not. If you know you will work every day, the 30-day plan’s price is $18.99, but the daily ceiling is still 5GB. More days do not mean a bigger day.

Settings that make hotspot look broken

  • VPN on the phone: some VPNs refuse to share, or they route only the phone. Test with the VPN off.
  • Low Data Mode or Data Saver: they can throttle tethered devices first.
  • The laptop is still on a captive portal from the airport. Forget that network.
  • Data switching put the upstream back on the home SIM. The home SIM’s data should be off, or you may pay your home carrier for the laptop’s traffic.

If the phone loads pages and the laptop does not, the problem is the hotspot session, not Viettel. Toggle the hotspot, forget the Wi-Fi on the laptop, and rejoin. If neither device loads pages, you are back on the no-data page. Do not delete the eSIM as a hotspot fix.

If you are sharing with people who do not need the connection all day, turn the hotspot off between uses. A laptop left joined will keep its own background sync running against your 5GB. The phone counter on the remaining-data page is how you see that spend. There is no separate hotspot invoice and no way to add a gigabyte at 9 p.m. The day either has data or it does not, until 23:59 Vietnam time.
